Recently, the internet was in turmoil following the announcement of Elon Musk wanting to acquire Twitter for 44 billion dollars. The unexpected offer was made by the entrepreneur who is known for his large-scale business ventures and connections with Tesla.
Since the purchase, Musk has discussed potential changes to the platform, including adding an “edit” tweet feature and cracking down on fake accounts. Musk’s acquisition of Twitter makes it one of the most expensive apps ever purchased in the world. However, it will not be the last.
According to financial experts at Merchant Cash Advance, this is the latest in a long line of purchases that have sought out the most expensive apps sold.
Here are some of the most expensive apps
In 2016, Microsoft made the decision to buy LinkedIn for the colossal sum of $26.2 billion. The deal saw LinkedIn shares skyrocket and the social media network has since grown into a much more advanced business platform. Initially, Microsoft aimed to grow the networking site by integrating it with Microsoft’s own software and the move paid off, leading to significant growth in the user base over the years.
Being one of the best-known app purchases, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014. At the time, the app was not making much money and the pricing was considered very extreme, but can be attributed to Mark Zuckerberg. what it needed to do to iron out a surging competitor before it had a chance to overtake Facebook’s success. Facebook also spent $1 billion on popular photo-sharing app Instagram in 2012. A shocking amount, considering Instagram only had 13 employees at the time.
Dating back to 2006, when Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion, the video site had only been around for a few years but had begun to grow at a breakneck pace. There are tens of billions of videos on the platform these days and should now be worth around $20 billion as it continues to thrive and their music subscription service has surpassed 50 million members.
Over the past few months, the simple yet addictive online game has exploded and is seeing millions of people registering daily to guess the five-letter word. In January, The New York Times bought Wordle for $1 million and kept the same no-frills design with no gameplay changes. It is believed that the acquisition will contribute to their goal of reaching 10 million digital subscribers by 2025, making their name known to everyone.
